Reducing pressure to sprinkler Valves

First time in the board so hopefully someone can provide some advice. I have a sprinkler system that was installed before I bought the house. FOr the rear garden, the main feed from the house to the 4 zones in the back yard has what appears to be excessive pressure and has caused the Connecting pipe at the join to come apart.......based on this I wanted to install a pressure release valve or a pressure regulator on the pipe.......not sure whether I am explains very well but any advice would be welcome. Having done some research there seem to be a number of options but seeing as I never had a sprinkler system before moving to the USA unable to really validate the best option.
Hope someone can help.

What water pressure did you measure, for you to concern yourself with it being excessive?
