Back flow preventer leaking

I tried to turn on my sprinkler system and am very confused.

Water comes out the back flow preventer only when we open the valve to the sprinklers. When it is pressurized with water from the house it holds fine.... but once we try to pressurize the sprinkler system it gushes lots of water! Help please!

It sounds like you could have a leak in the mainline for the irrigation system.

Maybe a good Idea to open up the backflow preventer and let it leak. Walk around the property and look for water or leaks.

The other possibility is that your backflow preventer is malfunctioning.

A couple of helpful pieces of information that would be helpful are how much is leaking, what type of Backflow preventer is it.
