Spring Start-Up

I just moved into a new house and have tried to get my sprinklers to turn on for the first time in the spring. The problem that I am having is when I turn on the valve to charge the sprinkler lines, it just keeps running. I had it on for about half an hour and the water just kept running and would not charge the lines. I looked for wet spots where maybe a crack developed but it is difficult to tell just by visual inspection. I tried opening and closing the zone valves a bit but nothing seemed to work.

Please let me know if you have possible solutions to this. I don't want to have a brown lawn the first year in my new house!

Thank you.

You need to locate the zone valves in your system and check to see that they are not manually set to be open.
