Help! Water Heater Issue After Sprinkler Install

I just had the sprinkler system installed. The plumber tapped into the cold water supply line to the TANKLESS water heater. Now whenever the sprinklers turn on or off, the water heater runs for about 1 minute. My guess is the water heater senses the pressure change in the supply line and somehow thinks hot water is being trickled. Is this going to damage the water heater in the long run? Is it worth it to have the sprinkler system reconfigured so it taps into the supply line just behind the meter?
