Backflow device

Hi there,
Complete novice here, but we bought a house with a approximately 30 year old sprinkler system.
Last summer we had to replace our furnace and hotwater heater.

Soon after it got cold we noticed the the pipes outside near the hose (since id'd as a BackFlow device has water shooting out the top under the cap.

If i close the outside water valve it stops. and all housewater seems normal.

I'm wondering what to do? replace the bonnet and poppet? call a pro? we can't water the lawn, or use the hose without lots of water flooding the area around the backflow device, it's pretty substantial, the sprinker system works fine when on, but the backflow device leaks.

and since ID'ing it as a backflow device I'm worried about the potable water in the house.

any help would be appreciated!
