Rainbird Sprinkler Controller Addition

I recently purchased a home with a rainbird yard sprinkler installed. Under and attached to the controller box in the garage is a small black box indicating active/inactive on/off. Can you tell me what that little black box is for?

I don't have a clue what that is. Maybe it's a trouble shooting tool.
Possibly the previous home owner was a handy do it yourself type. They can get very inventive.

You are probably looking at the receiver of a wireless rain detector. Any name or numbers visible on it?
