Valve buried in dirt, no valve box

Hello,
I have a friend who bought a house with an older sprinkler system. 3 of the valves are directly buried in dirt, no valve box. The system is working fine though... Should they dig up the valves & put a valve box over them? Or simply leave them alone & wait for them to fail?
Thanks,
Danny

It's totally up to you. I've seen valves work in the ground for 40 years.
There are sprinkler systems all over town installed by a guy who installed them underground on purpose. All brass valves though.
I'm not saying the plastic wont work.
Just be careful of the wiring if you dig. It's super easy to mistake for a root.
