Wiring for Irrigation Valves

My system is about 25 years old. I replaced two faulty valves. I cut and wired exactly the way the prior two wired. The wires from the soleniods lead into small cylinder looking devices that then connect to my control box. I still have a couple zones that will not turn on and one that won't turn off. I am wondering if the new valves don't require the little cylinder devices.... and maybe they are keeping my system from proper operation. Any ideas? I can't find anyone that even knows what those things are. THANKS!

You may have gummed up the new valves when you installed them, especially if they were glued into place.

The cylinder devices are probably some sore of grease cap.
