Designing for a well

Just got an estimate for a system in my front yard. The guy came and measured the area, came up with a 3 zone, 15 head system but never even turned on the water. I'm figuring since it's using a well that the system would need to be designed around the amount of water I get from the pump. He said theres no way for him to test the well other than a "drop test" that would take him 4 hours to complete. Is this correct?? I don't want my pump to blow out from excessive use but I don't know if that would be the case or not. I mean, what's the difference if I put out a bunch of sprinklers on my garden hoses and run them all day or if the hoses and sprinklers are buried? Doesn't seem to be a difference as far as I can see.

Any ideas?

If the system uses, for instance, Hunter PGP heads and a Pro-C controller, you can fit the watering to most any well supply. As much as a comprehensive well test might be desired, it's just as easy to swap rotor nozzles if the first set doesn't match the supply.

The one thing to ask about, is if there is going to be a strainer in the sprinkler supply. A 100-mesh Vu-Flow strainer is not too expensive, and it keeps any particles out of the system.

I searched and nothing here seems to be the answer I'm looking for so I'm gonna ask it myself.



I've decided to use the free rainbird design approach. I have it all filled out except for the well pressure part. It wants to know what my "Capacity of the pump at the following pressures" is at 30psi, 40psi and 50psi in GPM. How would I find this out since the pressure is constantly changing with the usage??
