Where are you located? If in the U.S. I am pretty sure it is the law to have a backflow. The backflow should be between the sprinkler shutoff valve and your first irrigation valve.

Turning on the sprinklers until the water stop coming out of them is not enough to get the water out of the system. The system will need to be blown out.

I don't see a drain anywhere on that manifold so you'll have to blow it out.

Do you have an air compressor to push the rest of the water out of the lines?

Where is your backflow device?
