Does The Controller Need To Match The System

Our house came with an Imperial Valet controller. The previous owners did not take very good care of it. I am missing the timer pins and there seem to be a lot of loose wires and not all of them are connected. I'd like to buy a new controller. Do I need to match the controller to sprinker heads / piping (i.e. replace with another Imperial) or would one of the other brands work fine with the inground parts?
