A Backflow Device... would it reduce pressure in water lines?

What does a backflow device really do? If it was installed incorrectly would it reduce the pressure in my water lines? I can only get my zone to operate by manually turning the top screw on the valve, this will allow the sprinkler heads to pop up and function. I have two other zones that function just fine.[align=auto]
