New house for me / old system

My system is not working at all. I have found 4 of 9 valves ( how do I locate the others?) Wiring looks pretty sketchy, transformer was hot to the touch so I unplugged it ( fire hazard?). The controller is probably 20 years old..."Lawn Late 12" ? I really don't know where to start , one thing I know is I want a new controller, this one worries me and doesn't seem very user friendly.

I was hoping someone could take me through some trouble shooting, and help locate the 5 valves MIA! I guess i should start with a volt meter?
