It's something mechanical with the zone valves. It might be necessary to replace them all (and if you do, replace them with valves that have flow controls)

all six stations come on at the same time

Have Hunter Pro-C controller box, Toro / Flo-Pro solenoids that twist on/of. Originally the system came on correctly, but when station 3 was supposed to go off it would stay on with station #4, #3 would stay on with # 5, etc. Now, when the system starts, all six of the stations come on, whether in auto or manual.
