There is a plastic key that opens the box.
Went through the same thing with my neighbor.
If you don't have a key, use an awl or sharp screwdriver to move the plastic inside the key hole down. That will release the door.

i am an electrician and no stranger to home improvement which is why i hate to ask such a seemingly stupid question but i cannot find the answer anywhere in my manual...how do i "open" the control box to access the fuse and the wiring?...it seems like it wants to just "pop" out but i am afraid to break it. any help would be much appreciated thankyou
